[14/03/2010] Colors’ Role in a Good Website Design” or “Why Colors are Significant for a Good Website Design?

The importance of colors has been overlooked by many website designers of late, but as a matter of fact the color concerns should be one of the top priorities if one wants to start with a good web design. The right color combinations are equally important as choosing the right content and the proper graphics for the website design.

The color concept is very important to the repertoire of an average website designer, but yet many of the web designers often ignore this fact and do not realize the importance and the impact the colors leave on the visitors. Therefore, one needs to understand how these colors affect the moods of the target audience and accordingly can create some amazing color schemes.

Color preferences vary according to the cultural differences, age differences, gender differences, class differences and also according to the latest trends, etc. For example, white color is the preferred choice in the West where as in the East it is not so; youngsters might prefer bright and vibrant colors where as the adults would prefer subtle and sober colors; men normally prefer cool colors like blue or green where as women tend to choose warmer colors like red or orange; people coming from working class prefer colors like red, blue, green, etc, where as the highly qualified people might prefer more obscure colors like mauve, azure, etc. Therefore, anything that evokes good response in the visitors might need to be carefully planned out while your website is being designed. Professional web design guidance would always be of a great help even if you have to go for a web design London while still living in any other part of UK or any other place in the world.

These colors can be categorized into neutral colors (whites, blacks, browns and grays), warm colors (reds, oranges, pinks and yellows) or cool colors (blues, purples and greens) depending on the effect they leave generally.

And the color schemes are normally composed of a single color, contrasting color or even a complementary color. Single color schemes are those which provide various shades and effects from a single color on a plain white background; complementary color schemes are those which blend two or more colors to give out a pleasant and a complimentary effect; where as the contrasting color schemes are those which use two or more dominant colors to reproduce that attentive effect.

The web browsers today share only 216 common colors which are called web safe colors, and a good web designer should know how to effectively amalgamate these colors and avoid dithering (where the browser has to mix colors which are out of 216 color pallet). Hence, one should always go for a browser web safe color while using solid colors as design elements. All of these factors play a vital role in deciding the right color combination for your website.
In order to have a good colored website design, some simple guidelines can be followed.
Make the text readable while opting for light colors on dark background.
Colors that are pleasant should be used.
Colors should reflect the image you want the visitors to see.
Use web safe colors for that consistent color format across various browsers.
The color combinations should be uniform on all your webpages.

The entire look of the website is surely based on the colors you use in the web design and will determine the success ratio for your company.
