[26/03/2010] Apple VS PC
Some people have called it a million dollar question, while others think of it as a marketing gimmick by both Microsoft and Apple to promote their respective products. The question though remains, which is a better choice. Here, I will be looking to find some answers regarding the Mac vs. PC rivalry.
Historically though Microsoft started the personal computer revolution with their windows operating system, it offered people a different platform for their computer needs. Apple on the other hand also came up with their own line of Macintosh computers and devices from time to time, but they had their ups and downs. Both Microsoft and Apple have totally different market sharing strategies.
Microsoft followed a general policy on marketing their computers with inexpensive hardware and software parts which allows every house to have a PC. Apple had a different mindset altogether they went for exclusivity and created a cult brand following. Their Macs are much more expensive that Microsoft’s PCs but that’s how they work. They follow a policy of making profits on the 10% percent market share they have, but because their computers are nearly double the price of an average Microsoft PC, it makes sense.
Both Apple and PC have their own advantages and disadvantages and so it totally depends on the end users and their requirements. A Mac is generally more secure because of its OSX operating system. It has got more protection built into the system against malwares and viruses. While Windows based PC is prone to malware, Trojans and viruses; expensive antivirus programs are needed to make a Windows PC more secure. Although with the new Windows 7 operating system, Microsoft has tried to make it more robust against hackers and viruses.
A general impression about Apple Macintosh computer is that it is more efficient with graphics acceleration and games while Microsoft based PCs have problems with that. This impression is somewhat true but the fact is that because Macintosh computers are more expensive they have good graphic cards built in on their average end computers while for a PC to handle graphics of that magnitude, one needs to spend more money to get the same performance.
One thing that Apple Macintosh computers have in their favor is that their computers are more good looking and made up of good quality materials, yes it costs more, but that’s where I think Apple have taken a lead over Microsoft. They have made their products more exclusive than Microsoft’s, creating a cult fan following. An advantage that Microsoft has over Apple is that most people can afford their computers with a built your own PC policy with no restrictions on the type of hardware, but with Apple, it is exclusive hardware and software which makes it, cost a bit higher.
Pros and Cons apart, the most important thing to consider before buying a computer is the purpose that it will serve. If it’s for common daily usage than I would recommend getting a Microsoft based PC, but if it’s for high end graphics work with less security issues than getting an Apple would be a better idea.
