Java is a pure object-oriented programming language which was developed by Sun Microsystems. James Gosling designed this language. Firstly its name was not java but ‘Oak’. Syntax of java is somewhat similar to C and C++. It has fewer low-level facilities and object model. Code written in java typically compiles to byte code and makes a file with .class extension. This .class file can be run on any JVM (java virtual machine). Java is platform independent. It is portable and can run on any operating system such as Windows, Solaris, UNIX, Macintosh, Linux etc. JDK (java development kit) is used for developing and creating java applications. End-users use a JRE (Java Runtime Environment) for standalone applications designed in java. Applets are small java programs which are run by java enabled web browser.
