[01/12/2009] JPEG

"Joint Photographic Experts Group", this group created the standard for images and JPEG (pronounced jay-peg) is named after this group. In computing, it is a method which is commonly used for compression of photographic image. By allowing selectable tradeoff between image quality and storage size, we can adjust degree of compression. Typically 10:1 compression can be achieved with little loss in quality of the image. JPEG has been a common file format. Many image file formats use JPEG compression. Most of the capture devices such as digital cameras use JPEG file format. It is common format for transmitting and storing images on WWW.

JPG format is very popular in web design for example in galleries with photos.
