[01/12/2009] Local Area Network

Local Area Network: A local area network is a group of computers which are connected and cover a small area, like an office, home, buildings, school, colleges, or an airport. LAN has higher transmission rate, less need for leased telephone lines, and small geographic area.

The technologies for LAN being used are Ethernet which uses twisted pair cabling and Wi-Fi. Both of these technologies have become most common technology. LAN cabling is based in grades of co-axial cable. IBM's designing of token ring uses the shielded twisted pair cabling. Via leased lines a LAN can have connection with other local area network.
