[01/12/2009] PNG file

One of the very famous formats for bitmap images is Portable Network Graphics (PNG). It makes use of lossless data compression. The main aim of introducing PNG was to replace GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) because it does not require any official document conferring a right. Basically it is called as P-N-G. The word PNG is taken from the word GIF as “PNG’s Not GIF” unprofessionally.

PNG is wider in its work and encourages the use of RGB, greyscale or RGBA images. PNG does not encourage the use of colour spaces but it helps in moving of images through internet but not the official images.

Extension of the PNG file is “PNG” or “png”. They are of the type MIME, i.e. “image/png”.

PNG is playing more important role now in web designing.
