POP: POP acronyms for Post Office Protocol which is an internet standard protocol of application-layer. It used for retrieving e-mails from a server placed on location by locally placed e-mail clients over TCP/IP connection. IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) and POP are widespread internet standard protocols used for retrieving e-mails. Several revisions have made on Post Office Protocol and now POP3 is final version. POP 3 works on the port number 110 and uses the TCP. Encryption for the transmission may be either using Secure Sockets Layer or Transport Layer Security. Few clients and servers, such as Gmail, Google, employ alternate method that is alternate-port method which works on port 995.
