[01/12/2009] Port

Port: In computer networking, it is process specific software or an application specific which serves as a communications endpoint. It is defined in Transfer layer Protocols contained in IP Suite, such as User Data Protocol (UDP) and Transmission Control Protocol (TCP). Any specific port is determined by number given to it, commonly called as port number. It is associated with protocol and IP address used for communication. TCP, UDP SCTP and DCCP which are protocols of Transport Layer specify source point and destination point port numbers in packet headers. A port number ranges from 0 to 65535 and can have maximum 16 digits. Any process associating with a particular port is known as binding. To send/receive data, it'll listen for incoming/outgoing packets whose IP address and port number match that port. Multiple ports can be bind to processes. Port number 25 is used for incoming mail requests and 110 for outgoing requests.
