[01/12/2009] SMTP

SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol), Internet standard for e-mail (electronic mail) transmission across IP networks. First of all it was defined in RFC 821 and last time it was updated by RFC5321 that includes the ESMTP (extended SMTP). SMTP uses port 25 for its working and used for outgoing e-mail transport. While mail transfer agents use SMTP for sending and receiving messages and e-mails, typically SMTP is used for user-level client e-mail applications for transporting a message or e-mail. For receiving e-mails, client applications usually use the POP or IMAP to access mail box. SMTP does not define message content but message transport. It only defines the sending details.
