[03/12/2009] Connecting Domain Name with Hosting
Let’s understand what domain name and hosting is all about. A domain name is an identification label that defines an administrative autonomy, authority, or control in the internet, based on the Domain Name System (DNS). A domain name uses multi-level strings separated by periods. For example, www.hotmail.com signifies the address of the computer network connection and the owner of the address. Hosting is also known as Web site hosting or Web hosting. Hosting is a service or business function that allows individuals or organizations to store information, images, video, or other content that are accessible to Web users.Users hold back the complete privilege of getting a domain name themselves, if not they can buy one from a reputed domain name registrar. On purchasing a domain name from any other provider, you need to point it to the domain server by using a process named "setting DNS" or "setting domain name servers".
While purchasing a domain from any domain registrar, make sure you register the same domain name at InterNIC (Internet Network Information Center). At this point, you must relegate the essential technical information and as well the contact information of the domain purchased. Technical details will include:
- Domain name
- The exact registration date of the domain
- Owner’s contact address and name
- Contact information including email address, phone number, permanent address of the administrative should be provided
- Remember to give the billing contacts too
- Share the name server settings as well
To host the Website in a hosting server, one should follow the settings defined by the registrar and entered in the hosting web server. The DNS settings will be unique and you can set the domain name by following the procedure below:
- Login into the company website that provided you the domain name
- Enter the username and password details for signing into the site.
- Identify the link where DNS settings are listed.
- Update the technical details as provided for hosting.
For example, the name server settings information would be as show below.
- NameServer details
- Primary DNS Server Hostname: dns7.correctdns.com
- Primary DNS Server Address: 149.203.31.15
- Secondary Name Server Hostname: dns8.correctdns.com
- Secondary Name Server Address: 149.203.32.17
- After you change your name servers, you should wait for 12-24 hours for the DNS to update the website information into the server.
It is simple to handle and any one with little knowledge of computer, internet and hosting can do it quickly with no trouble.
