[03/12/2009] How does dedicated, reseller and standard hosting differ from one another?

Dedicated hosting server is an internet hosting method where the client leases an entire server, where others are denied to hold their rights and space in the server. This method comes along with numerous advantages while compared with other different shared hosting methods. The organization has complete control over the server(s), which includes the operating system, hardware, and others. This method is more stable and flexible than shared web hosting, because customer’s have full control over the server.

The server administration may be provided as an add-on service by the hosting company. In certain cases a dedicated server can provide less overhead and a larger return on investment.

Dedicated servers are placed in data centers, similar to collocation facilities. This provides redundant power sources and HVAC systems. But, in many cases the hardware is owned by the provider and in certain cases they provide support for the operating system or applications. This type of hosting is suitable for medium to large scale customers or organizations. When the organization drives huge traffic towards their business website, and has incredible internet resources and completely remains dependent to the web – getting dedicated servers is wise and far beneficial.

Reseller:

In this method, the owner can use his assigned bandwidth and hard drive space to host other company’s websites – precisely like being a hosting service provider. The reseller can purchase big hosting plan and then resell it to the customers in smaller parts. A reseller account gets a definite portion of bandwidth, hard drive, but it keeps you bounded under control.

The main disadvantage for a reseller hosting is the standard of providing customer support! Ideally, the customer support is handled by the parent company. But, the parent company delegates the reseller with rights to handle the same. In addition, the hosting company offers various hosting control panels to manage this type of hosting, and billing support too.

Standard:

The hosting companies provide various control panels to manage this type of hosting at an extra cost. One of the standard methods is, website hosting in a home server. In this method, dedicated hosting could be placed in a private residence and further it can be used to host one or more web sites. In dedicated hosting, the site owner will get root access to the server for making make changes and control in the site. Remember, all these factors aren’t the same with every provider, but fluctuated depending upon the host you select. Certain hosts provide an admin console or access through their helpdesk technicians, whereas few others don’t grant this option.
